Abstract

Prolactin-secreting tumors (prolactinomas) are the commonly encountered hyperfunctional pituitary tumors and account for approximately 35% of all pituitary tumors. The clinical features of patients with prolactinomas are variable because they produce mass effect, endocrinopathy or both.
There are numerous causes for hyperprolactinemia, but in practice the three most commonly etiologic factors are ingestion of certain drug, primary hypothyroidism and pituitary tumors.
Significant advances have been made in neuroimaging techniques that have influenced the diagnostic workup of patients with lesions in the sellar region. These techniques include high-resolution computed tomography in the coronal plane, digital substraction angiography, cavernous sinus venography and magnetic resonance imaging. Many factors enter into the thearpeutic decision-making process in patients with prolactinomas, and several modalities of therapy are reviewed and therpeutic plans are discussed.
